[New Rochelle, New York]   -- Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 16 at 6:00pm, the City of New Rochelle Youth Bureau Eco-Ambassadors will host an end of summer event to present what they have learned this summer about environmental justice. The summer program is a collaboration between the Youth Bureau and local organizations such as the Energy Justice Law and Policy Center and NewRoar that have funded programs for our young people, provided guest speakers and provided a stipend for three youth interns.

Seventeen early high school students have participated in the Eco-Ambassador Earn and Learn program through the New Rochelle Youth Bureau which provides them with summer youth employment. New Rochelle science teachers Jonathan LaRosa and Carmen Glenn bring their ecology expertise to the role of program coordinators.

For six weeks, the students have spent three days a week exploring shorelines, collecting data, visiting natural areas, caring for a school garden at a local elementary school, designing their own research questions and speaking with people active to improve local environmental issues.

The Energy Justice Law and Policy Center partnered with the New Rochelle Youth Bureau Eco-Ambassadors program to connect local youth with environmental justice activists and experts. Programs included “Environmental Justice 101,” “Know Your Local Officials,” “Artivism,” and “Healthy Indoor Plants.” New Roar also provided support for the program.

Carmen Glenn, Instructor

“Our Eco-ambassadors grades 9-11 have been exploring local ecosystems, hearing voices from our community, getting their feet muddy in the field and becoming engaged in the local environmental issues that affect them.  This Wednesday’s public forum will provide an opportunity for the students to share their project-based recommendations for improvements to the city’s environmental actions.”

Raya Salter, Executive Director, Energy Justice Law and Policy Center

“We are thrilled to support the City and the Eco-Ambassador program to help provide innovative and enriching environmental education to New Rochelle’s youth.”
